The author of I See London sets her sights on Washington, D. C., with a sexy new series about three sisters, the secrets they keep, and a powerful blog with a knack for exposing scandals…
Jackie Gardner knows all about dirty little secrets. The illegitimate daughter of one of the most influential senators in Washington, D.C., she grew up surrounded by the scandals and shadows of politics. Now that she’s landed an internship with a powerful political consulting firm, she’s determined to launch her career and take this city by storm.
William Andrew Clayton was born for politics. He knows the drill: work hard, play discreetly, and at all costs, avoid scandal. At twenty-six, his campaign for the Virginia State Senate is the first step to cementing his future. It’s time for him to settle down, to find the perfect political spouse. He needs a Jackie Kennedy, not a Marilyn…
When Jackie meets Will in the bar of the Hay-Adams Hotel, sparks fly. But the last thing Will needs is to be caught in a compromising position, and an affair with a political candidate could cost Jackie her career. When what began as one steamy night, becomes a passion neither one of them can walk way from, they must decide if what they have is really love, or just another dirty little secret…
Political romance? Count me in. I swoon for a smart book and that’s just what this is.
Chantel knows how to write. The little things that often play out in ways that make me roll my eyes didn’t do so in this story. The dialogue was intriguing and intelligent. The heroine’s decision making was based on logic and reasoning. The hero wasn’t afraid to be emotional and play the part of the fighter for love. No one was sex first, brains second. Basically, I wasn’t ready to slap everyone. Thank you for this.
The plot wasn’t full of nonsense. I fell in love with the characters and their story. Neither were perfect. Thankfully. Their love wasn’t full of the same plot twists and clichés I often read. This book has many facets and each one shined brighter than the next. The supporting characters were brilliant. There were moments that seemed dragged out and others that passed too quickly.
Chantel writes smart, sexy, and fun. Who can’t get on board with that? I can’t wait to see what Chantel does next. I look forward to reading this series!
I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot with the last few reads I’ve done by new-to-me authors, and Chanel Cleeton is no exception. I fell head over heels, no holds barred, completely and utterly in love with these characters, the storyline, and the exceptional writing. Do you like politics, scandal, celebrity gossip, and smart, sexy characters? This book is for you!
The political intrigue and gossip storyline was enough to keep me entertained, but throw in the romance angle and I was hooked. I felt like I was getting an insider’s look at the political consulting machine and campaign world. All of these little details made this book highly entertaining. What can I say? I loved it. When I finished, I wanted to go right back to page one to start all over again. Let’s talk about the players.
The lovely Jackie Gardner may be my new favorite heroine. She is everything I love in my female characters: strong, confident, career driven, brilliant, plus she’s a blonde bombshell. She’s in control of her life and there’s none of that wishy-washy, I’m a delicate flower bullshit. My girl, Jackie, calls ‘em like she seems ‘em. As tough and determined as she is, she also has some vulnerabilities. She was born amidst a scandal and has been running from the stigma her entire life. It’s one thing to have your own secrets that you created, but when you are born into them through no fault of your own it’s completely different. Jackie has learned how to manage her secrets all the while pursuing a political consulting career.
Who could possibly be good enough for my Jackie? My dear William Clayton. Oh Will. He is quite simply perfection. I kept picturing Will as a blonde John F. Kennedy, Jr. He’s an old moneyed, east coast, lacrosse playing, sailing, privileged, ivy leaguer. But guess what? He’s genuinely a good guy! He may have been born to American royalty with a silver spoon but he’s got a worker’s heart. He’s unapologetic about his money and his good family name, but that just makes him more endearing. I was rooting for him from the jump. He’s definitely the kind of guy you want to bring home to your family. He’s running for a state senate seat, but will Jackie be his biggest help or hindrance?
I haven’t mentioned the sex yet. Let’s just say Will and Jackie don’t need any bells or whistles or implements. All they need is each other and my god, it’s some of the hottest sex I’ve ever read. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable –and I mean enjoyable- left hand worthy read. Who says bad boys are the only hot ones? Not me. This nice guy left me squirming and hot in all the right places. There was something so carnal about these scenes that I can’t stop thinking about the characters.
One of the things that made this book so special is that Will is completely charmed by Jackie and it shows. She’s different than all the safe girls he’s ever dated, and he has his own sexual awakening of sorts. Jackie does too obviously, but I love that Will doesn’t shy away from his feelings and puts his emotions out there front and center.
Along with all the other goodness, this book had little day-to-day things that just made me fist pump. Will loves Double Stuf Oreos. So do I! Jackie uses Eye of the Tiger as her jam when she’s ready to kickass. So do I! She uses the olive trick like a champ. So do I! They both love that beautiful line by Roethke. So do I!
In the end, this is a fantastic read. You should go one-click right now! You will not be disappointed.
P.S. The best part of all this? This is part of a series that will feature other characters. I am so excited to live in this world a little longer.
